My love for
beads was born out of a lifetime of travel, which all began
when
I lived in Italy as a young girl. I had the great fortune to be
a young person in Florence and in Rome for three years, and
to have
the ancient history and art of these places move me deeply, and
awaken my curiosity about human history. Since then I have journeyed
to
many, many places: East Africa, China, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala,
Western Europe, and Southeast Asia. In my travels, I have collected
beautiful jewelry and artifacts, marveling at their embodiment
of their cultures and the mysteries carried forward.
I
am both a romantic and a Buddhist. The romantic in me relishes the
sensuality and the rich stories that live in beads, textiles, talismans,
sculptures, and paintings. The Buddhist deeply reveres the spiritual
energy held by these objects, which are both Art and religious offerings.
I have felt that my process of necklace making has been one of play,
exploration, and of prayer, as I follow the energies present in
the beads, and patiently wait for direction.
It is an interior
meditative process, and one that teaches me something each time
I sit down to make a necklace. There are times when my connection
to the work is so close and particular that I am driven to “name”
a particular piece. Sometimes I imagine the relationships and practices
of the ancient peoples of Mesopotamia, of Africa, Egypt, or Venice,
and sometimes I simply play with color, shape, and texture. It is
all about journeying, with respect and love, one bead at a time.
